Nursing Care Plan – Respiratory Acidosis

Respiratory acidosis results when any area of respiratory function is impaired, reducing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This impairment causes carbon dioxide retention. Because any increase in carbon dioxide levels causes a corresponding increase in hydrogen ion levels, carbon dioxide retention leads to acidosis. All causes of respiratory acidosis lead to an acid-excess acidosis.
