Things to Know About Liposuction

Liposuction is nowadays the most popular form of cosmetic surgery in the United Stated according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. People who undergo liposuction reach to about 400,000. The number of men going through the procedure is also considerably increasing.

How does a Liposuction Work?

In liposuction, the doctor removes the fat under the skin using either one of the following techniques:

  1. Tumescent technique. With this method, a saline solution is injected through a slit in the skin. The injected solution is allowed to diffuse on the fatty tissues of area worked on. This is the safest technique as it allows a faster recovery. However, the charge for this technique is quite expensive. Actually, it is the most expensive method for liposuction. The process of perlocation, allowing the solution to diffuse in the fatty tissues of the skin, may take about an hour or two. The procedure is best to be performed in an office. The agents used for a tumescent technique reduces bleeding too, making it the best fat removing procedure of all.
  2. Ultrasound-assisted Lipoplasty. Before suctioning the fat with this procedure, an ultrasound vibrating probe is liquefied. The procedure can be done externally using a hand-held device that is applied on the skin. If it is done internally, a vibrating canule is used. In clinics, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty is preferred.

What part of the body is liposuction performed?

The procedure can be performed on almost any part of the body where fat accumulation is present. These areas include the following:

  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Calves
  • Buttocks
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Face

Some procedures are done on more than area at once.

What should I expect during the procedure?

During the procedure, a local anesthetic is used. However, in some cases general anesthesia may be used as necessary. The duration of the procedure may take about two hours for the tumescent procedure. Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty takes more time than the other by about 30%.

Most procedures, about 90%, are done in an outpatient basis. The recovery may take up to two weeks depending on the area perlocated and the extent of the procedure. After the procedure, the client may expect a high level of discomfort due to bloating and presence of bruising.

How much does a liposuction procedure cost?

The cost may vary depending on the size of the area. Price may range from $3,000 to $10,000. Since liposuction is a cosmetic surgery, insurance does not cover its costs.
