Anti Influenza A(H1N1) Vaccine Developed
A day after the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to the ongoing global spread of the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus ( A Phase 6 designation indicates that a global pandemic is underway), Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG has announced that they have successfully produced the first batch of swine flu vaccine.
According to the drug company, the vaccine was made in cells, rather than grown in eggs as is usually the case with vaccines. It would use the first batch of vaccine for pre-clinical evaluation and testing. It is also being considered for clinical trials and will likely be approved and ready for sale after September.
Novartis reported that more than 30 governments have requested vaccine supplies, including the US Department of Health and Human Services, which placed a $289-million order in May.
As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.
