The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is urging elementary pupils to consider taking up nursing in college because the demand for nurses abroad is expected to rise until 2020, ABS-CBN News reported Tuesday.
Carmelita Dimzon, POEA deputy administrator, Dimzon said there is now a greater demand for Filipino nurses in Saudi Arabia. In fact, she said Saudi Arabia has the greatest demand for Filipino nurses at 46,000.
In contrast, the United States needs 31,000 while the United Kingdom and Ireland wants 5,000. Canada and Singapore each need 5,000 Filipino nurses, Dimzon added.
She said that the POEA has so far filled up 30,000 vacancies for Filipino nurses in Saudi Arabia, leaving 17,000 positions open.
